Firms should be aware of branded domain names

Applications to register branded domain names, such as .prada and .nike, can now be submitted to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The window for registering new domains, which cost around £120,000 and can be almost any word, will remain open until 12 April this year. Rod Beckstrom, chief executive of the ICANN, urged businesses that do not apply to ensure that any new domains do not infringe on their trademarks. From May, businesses will be able to submit objections to any domains they feel infringe their legal rights.
