Dear UKita Members

For our Med Tech ICT Innovation Club event, we're joining up with another Aston University event as follows:

Tuesday 9th October 2007

Warwick Lecture Theatre at 6.30pm

Inaugural Lecture by Professor Ian Nabney 'Hidden Connections: Learning from Data'

One of the most intractable problems facing us all is how to understand the vast quantities of data that surround us.  As we measure more and faster, as we create more digital content, as we search ever broader fields, we have a greater need for help in finding useful information from data.  This lecture will show how machine learning, the computer-based extraction of underlying models, can be used to uncover the hidden meanings of data and provide users with the information they need in a form that they can use.  These ideas will be illustrated with applications in many domains, including biomedical engineering, bioinformatics and pharmaceutical discovery, and meteorology."

There'll be tea/coffee from 5:30pm, the presentation for around an hour, questions and discussion, plus a networking buffet afterwards.

Prof Ian Nabney's research spans both the theory and applications of neural networks and other pattern recognition techniques. Much of his work is inspired by industrial problems in bioinformatics, biosignal processing, condition monitoring, remote sensing and financial forecasting.
