Chinese Domain Name Scam
3rd August 2008

Hi Tom,

Just wanted to alert you and the other UKITA members about a Chinese Domain Scam that appears to be doing the rounds; I’ve had quite a few emails from various “Chinese Domain Name Registrars” over the last month which after further investigation appears to be a scam. They are using my company’s [email protected] so they are obviously taking the info from the UKITA site and may be targeting our members.

They are sending out messages such as:

“We are Beijing Erimart Network Service Co, Ltd which is the domain name register center in China. We received a formal application from a company who is applying to register “TargetTesting” as their domain name and Internet keyword on July 23, 2008.Since after our investigation we found that this word has been in use by your company, and this may involve your company name or trade mark, so we inform you in no time. If you consider these domain names and internet keyword are important to you and it is necessary to protect them by registering them first, contact us soon. Thanks for your co-operation and support.”

Initially, thinking it may be a legitimate enquiry I responded and exchanged a few emails to find out more but after searching for the company that wanted to use “TargetTesting” and finding nothing and receiving an email from that company via a hotmail account I realised that it was probably a scam and did some further investigation and found numerous references to this scam.

I’m sure some UKITA members will already be aware of this or recognise it as a scam but it might be worthwhile alerting the members to this fact (since they appear to have extracted the list from the UKITA site).

Regards
