The University is the place of study for 17,904 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs more than 3,800 staff across a range of University departments. Over 91% of the University's academic staff are located in departments with top research ratings of 5 or 5*. Research is carried out in all 30 departments, spanning Science, Engineering, Social Sciences and the Humanities, and in over 40 specialist research centres and institutes. The University also incorporates the internationally and nationally acclaimed Warwick Business School, Warwick Manufacturing Group, The National B2B Centre and the Sun European Manufacturing Centre Of Excellence. In 2001/2002 Warwick researchers won over £37M of research grant and contract income from industry, the national Research Councils, charitable foundations, and the European Union. It also has access to a range of state of the art development facilities and has formed several ICT related companies over recent years.Collaboration with Industry is a key element of Warwick's research programme. The University has always been known for its links with industry, the aim being to create mutually beneficial partnerships, to secure sponsorship, and to facilitate technology transfer and the effective exploitation of the results of research. The University Science Park is situated adjacent to the University Campus, and with 70 companies and around 1,300 employers helps facilitate the transfer of University know-how and research into industry in the region.The University can provide a range of services to commercial partners from basic research and development through to commercialisation of new Intellectual Property. In the field of ICT the University has a range of expertise in the following areas: Intelligent Systems; Digital Systems; Image Processing; Expert Systems; Sensors; Systems Modelling and Simulation; Ultrasonics; Control and Telematics; Virtual Reality and Simulation; Optical and Radio Communications; Nanotechnology; Signal Processing; Expert Systems and many other areas. Expertise is available throughout the University which may have application in the field of ICT; the creative arts; chemistry; biological sciences and physics to name but a few.The University of Warwick is further committed to maximising the commercial application of its research to benefit the regional and national economy. Warwick Ventures spearheads this mission through patents, licenses and by creating spin-off companies based on selected research innovations. To date the University has engaged in several collaborative ventures to exploit innovations generated by academic staff. New innovations and opportunities are arising all the time which can be developed in collaboration with commercial partners.
