EU and other funded projects are a double-edged sword:
The good
- There is a frighteningly large amount of tax-payers money put into funded projects especially the EU projects
- Access to valuable contacts also working on the project
- If you have a cutting-edge idea you want to bring to reality, they can be a way to get your idea subsidised by the UK or EU taxpayer
The bad
- Usually very paperwork-heavy in each of the application, running and claiming stages
- Long lead times - you can wait a long time for them to start and to be able to start claiming any funding back
- Match - most schemes don't cover the whole of your costs - you have to 'match' with a percentage of your time or money which you put in yourself - this could be up to 50% that you have to find yourself
- Payments can be months later than planned
- Bank guarantees can be involved
- This makes these schemes quite unappealing to SMEs (Small and medium sized enterprises with up to 250 employees - this includes 96% of all UK IT companies)
The ugly
- Audit and penalties! Depending on the scheme, the project owners and partners can expect to get visited by EU project audit officials, possibly years later, who will THOROUGHLY audit your paperwork, timesheets etc and they will be looking to be able to CLAW BACK sums from the funding you received or issue a financial penalty it's their job to do this and they take it seriously
Having said that these projects can be unappealing to SMEs, a lot depends on the other partners in the project and very often these projects are led by Universities and similar institutions who are worth approaching locally to ask them how they engage with SMEs in these activities.
